Sanctuary Care

Not every horse can be rehomed, and that’s okay.
Some require lifelong sanctuary due to age, medical needs, or temperament.
Your support provides feed, veterinary care, farrier visits, and love for these permanent residents, ensuring they live out their days in comfort and dignity.

From Healing to Helping Others

Rescue Horses in Action

At Mile High Rescue, rehabilitation is only the beginning.
Many of our horses go on to become teachers, helping students learn horsemanship, empathy, and connection through lessons, clinics, and workshops.

Success Stories

Success Stories

Chuck

When Chuck was surrendered to Mile High Rescue, he was in need of a new beginning and understanding of his veterinary needs and specialty care. With time, patience, and compassionate care, Chuck began to reveal his calm, gentle nature.

It wasn’t long before the perfect match came along, a young boy and his parents who instantly connected with Chuck. They quickly formed a special bond built on trust, kindness, and shared joy.

Chuck's forever home is spendt with his best friend by his side. Their story is a beautiful reminder of what can happen when second chances are given and love leads the way.

Argo

Argo’s journey began when he was surrendered to MHR by his previous owner. Already broke to ride, Argo came to us as a horse suited for an experienced rider and handler. But it didn’t take long for his true personality to shine through — gentle, loving, and full of charm.

Around the barn, he quickly earned the nickname “Prince Argo”, and for good reason! He absolutely adores attention, grooming sessions, treats, and — most of all — kids. His calm, affectionate nature made him a favorite during visits and events, and soon, the perfect family came along to give him the royal treatment he deserves.

Today, Prince Argo lives happily in Parker, Colorado, where he’s spoiled by his loving family. He enjoys local pleasure shows, trail rides, and dressing up for special occasions — especially birthday parties! If you’d like to invite Prince Argo to make a magical appearance at your next birthday celebration, reach out to MHR, and we’ll connect you with his family!

Oreo

Oreo is a striking young horse with a heart as big as his bold black-and-white coat. As an unbroke 2–3-year-old, Oreo was sold at the CLA auction with an uncertain future ahead of him. That’s when MHR stepped in to give him a chance to grow, learn, and shine.

Once he arrived, MHR’s training team began working with Oreo, helping him learn trust, confidence, and the joy of partnership. He proved to be a quick learner and an eager adventurer. Exposed to trail riding, it didn’t take long to see that Oreo absolutely loved being out in the open, exploring and soaking up the world around him.

Before long, Oreo caught the heart of his forever family. Today, he lives happily in Monte Vista, Colorado, surrounded by his beloved horse and burro friends, and his best dog buddy, DeeDee. Whether he’s hitting the trails or just enjoying the moutnain life, Oreo is loved, spoiled, and exactly where he belongs.

Lady Blue

Lady Blue’s journey started on the racetrack, where this tall, elegant Thoroughbred gave it her all, but racing just wasn’t her calling. When her days on the track ended she found herself skinny and being sold at the CLA auction, uncertain of what her future would hold. That’s when MHR stepped in to give her a second chance at the happy ending she so deeply deserved.

From the moment Lady Blue arrived at MHR, her sweet and gentle nature shone through. Despite all the changes in her world, she greeted her new life with curiosity and positivity. She quickly joined our training program, where she was introduced to trails, arena work, and the joy of simply being a horse again. Lady Blue excelled and soaked up every bit of love and guidance along the way.

It wasn’t long before the perfect person came along. A kind woman who saw Lady Blue's sweet and gentle soul. The connection was instant. Now, Lady Blue lives in Golden, Colorado where she spends her days exploring  trails, basking in the sunshine, and being endlessly spoiled by her loving family.

Orion

Orion’s journey is a true testament to the power of rescue and second chances. He arrived at MHR from the CLA auction in Fort Collins, where his goofy, larger-than-life personality immediately captured our hearts. Orion was the first to greet us at the gate, eager and friendly, as if he were welcoming us into his world. With his curious nature and perked ears, we saw incredible potential in him from the start, and we knew we had to give him the chance to thrive.

After settling in, Orion began training with MHR’s team. Thanks to a conversation with his previous owner, we learned that while he was "broke" and had been ridden, he was unpredictable and had a tendency to unseat riders—something we would need to work through. As we began his training, we also discovered that Orion had some medical issues that had likely contributed to his behavior. With months of veterinary and farrier care, his physical well-being improved, and he was finally ready to be ridden under saddle.

Though he was a bit of a "wiggle worm" and showed signs of limited prior training, Orion’s spirit never faltered. With patience and consistency, MHR’s team worked with him to build trust and develop his skills.

The true highlight of Orion’s story came when he was adopted by a wonderful community member, someone who could not have offered him a more perfect home. Together, they’ve formed a bond, growing in confidence and skill as they navigate the world of low-level jumping and English pleasure riding.

Orion continues to thrive in MHR’s lesson program, and his journey from rescue to success is a heartwarming example of the incredible transformations that adoption can bring.

Seven

A Lucky Charm with a Big Heart

From the moment Seven arrived, he turned heads — and hearts. With the bold “7” marking on his face and a personality just as distinctive, he quickly became a barn favorite. Playful, friendly, and endlessly curious, Seven had a knack for making every volunteer and visitor smile.

Through patient training and a willingness to learn, his natural talent began to shine. He greeted each new challenge with the same eager spirit that made him so special — whether it was trying a new obstacle or perfecting his groundwork manners.

In early 2025, Seven’s story came full circle when he found his forever home with a multi-generational family of horse lovers — a grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter who all fell in love with his charm and gentle nature. Today, Seven shares his days with his new equine friend, Dolly, soaking up love and attention from every member of the family.

Seven’s new home is filled with laughter, learning, and love — proof that sometimes, the luckiest horses are the ones with a “7” written right on their face.

Maggie

From Uncertain Beginnings to Unconditional Love

Maggie’s journey began at a Texas feedlot auction, where she was rescued and brought to Mile High Rescue to begin her healing. With time and kindness, this shy pony learned to trust again and was adopted by a wonderful owner who loved her deeply.

After five happy years together, Maggie’s owner became too ill to care for her and made the difficult decision to return her to MHR in 2024. It didn’t take long for Maggie’s gentle nature and kind spirit to catch the attention of a couple looking for a companion for their horse—and she was the perfect fit.

Today, Maggie enjoys a peaceful life surrounded by love, with light rides from her family’s grandkids and plenty of pampering from her new “parents.” She’s proof that second chances can lead to the happiest of endings, and that every horse’s perfect home is worth waiting for.
